What happens when an Owl Moon rises? In DC playwright Liz Maestri’s new work, the everyday world veers into extremities – hot blood spurts and passions seep into a wintry landscape of cold and desolation. Such extreme territory is familiar to Taffety Punk Theatre Company. Whether it is the group’s persistent pursuit of fresh and engaging voices (Owl Moon is its third production of a new play by a local playwright in as many years), or its desire to devise new and challenging works (last year’s critically acclaimed suicide.chat.room), or its mission to push Shakespeare to the limit in its Riot Grrrl and Bootleg productions of the Bard, Taffety Punk is never in a mood to play it safe.

"...D.C. playwright Maestri freely samples a lot of moods as she aims for something like black comedy (with heart, sorta), but bloody-funny Martin McDonagh ("_blankThe Lieutenant of Inishmore," "_blankIn Bruges") it's not. While the confidence is appealing, Maestri doesn't entirely command the palette of antic humor and psychological insight. You can tell that Bruneau's troupe is game for anything - the ending comes out of the blue - but the target's a little too soupy to be hit with consistency."

"...There's something special about getting to know a new play that's a lot like getting to know a new person; they're all mystery and surprises, and the journey into their hearts reminds you of your own humanity. If Taffety Punk's world premiere presentation of Owl Moon, written by D.C. resident Liz Maestri, ends up leaving just a few too many mysteries unexplored in the end, it does offer many deeply felt -- and often deeply funny -- surprises along the way."

"...But the title role, more or less, is where it’s at: A kindly spirit-owl puppet built by Don Becker and performed by Marcus Kyd tends to fly away with every scene he’s in, not least because you never know how he’ll treat the spiritual wounds of these sand-blasted souls: His words of consolation run from stoic and elemental (“You are loved and protected!”) to divorced guidance counselor-y (“You’re gonna be just fine”). And when the story, via Gilbert’s character, does briefly veer into direct address, it’s one of the funniest moments of the evening, one that like the best crime and suspense stories makes conspirators of us all."

Owl Moon often feels less like a play than an inkblot: what you see in it is the story you make for yourself. The hiccups in chronology, the rapid style shifts, the non-ending… it’s all in good fun. Bruneau and her cast make a lot of footprints in the snow; it’s our job to suss out who went where why.
