Flying V Steps Into the Ring with Marco Ramirez's The Royale in Silver Spring

The Royale presented by Flying V at Silver Spring Black Box Theater

Flying V is now in the middle of its fall run of The Royale, Marco Ramirez's award-winning drama about ambition, fame, and the heavy price of both, playing through Oct 31 at the Silver Spring Black Box. The production opened Oct 12, and audiences who have yet to catch it have a little over two weeks left to see one of the most physically inventive plays of recent years brought to life on an intimate stage.

Inspired by the real career of Jack Johnson, the first Black heavyweight boxing champion, The Royale follows Jay, a Black boxer in 1905 who is fighting his way toward a title bout against the reigning white heavyweight champion in what the papers are calling "the fight of the century." Living under Jim Crow, Jay has every reason to want the glory that such a victory would bring, but as the match draws closer he is forced to reckon with what his success might mean for the community around him. The possibility of becoming a cultural hero comes bundled with the very real threat of racial violence, and Jay must decide what he is willing to risk, and who else might pay for it.

What sets the play apart is its approach to the boxing itself. Rather than staging literal fights, Ramirez calls for stylized combat in which the rhythm of the punches, stomps, and claps mirrors the inner struggles of the fighters, turning each round into a window on character. The result is a compact piece, running about 75 minutes, that has earned a reputation for delivering an emotional impact far beyond its length. Its off-Broadway premiere won Obie, Drama Desk, and Outer Critics Circle Awards, and critics have praised it as both a gripping sports story and a pointed examination of systemic racism that still resonates today.

The production marks the directorial debut of Raven Lorraine, a DC- and Baltimore-based director, choreographer, and teaching artist whose recent credits include Dreamgirls at Bowie State University and work with Arts on the Horizon and The National Theatre. Lorraine says she fell in love with how the play takes a sport as violent and demanding as boxing and uses it to illuminate the internal battles a person must face to achieve glory. She works under the artistic leadership of Flying V's Joey Ibanez and Tim German, with a design team that includes August Henney on set and props, Delaney Bray on sound, Regan McKay on costumes, and Vida Huang on lights.

Playwright Marco Ramirez brings considerable credentials of his own. His plays have been produced at Lincoln Center Theater, The Kennedy Center, The Old Globe, and Center Theatre Group, and he is also an Emmy-nominated television writer and producer whose credits include Daredevil, Sons of Anarchy, and Orange Is the New Black.

The pairing feels like a natural fit for Flying V, a DMV company known for pop culture-infused work that spans theatre, digital media, and stage combat and professional wrestling. The company has built its identity around larger-than-life moments on small stages, and a play that turns a prizefight into a kind of percussive ritual plays directly to those strengths.

The Royale runs through Oct 31 at the Silver Spring Black Box, 8641 Colesville Road in Silver Spring. Tickets are $35, with Pay What You Want and doorbuster deals also available, making this a particularly accessible night of theatre for anyone looking to catch it before the final bell.
