Inspired by the real-life career of Jack Johnson, The Royale follows the story of Jay, a Black boxer in 1905, living under Jim Crow laws and striving to take on the white heavyweight champion in "the fight of the century." As he works toward his ambitions, he must also confront the potential impact of the fight on his community. Jay grapples with what it means to become a cultural hero alongside the threat of racial violence all around him.
