Cyrano Reviews
Cyrano
Washington City Paper- Somewhat Recommended
"...This cycle of adaptation continues with Taffety Punk Theatre Company’s Cyrano, now playing at the Capitol Hill Arts Workshop. Lise Bruneau writes and directs this production (adapting Gladys Thomas and Mary F. Guillemard’s 1898 translation of the French original), and her most unique adaptation choice is turning the title character into a woman. This decision allows Cyrano’s strained desires to feel more tragic and socially dangerous—but by sticking so closely to the source material, Bruneau misses some of the potential of a queer reinterpretation of the play."

"...Five gifted actors in four bare walls work theatre magic to bring the epic work of Cyrano to life in Taffety Punk's new interpretation skillfully directed and adapted by Lise Bruneau. The production is vibrant, visceral and immediate. The space is so intimate there is no way to just phone in a performance - this extraordinary cast delights us and breaks our hearts."

"...Cyrano de Bergerac, whose wit, bravery, and nose have turned him into a legend, has now arrived at Taffety Punk. And, in an intriguing twist, he is now a she, played with exquisite depth and charm by Kimberly Gilbert and flawlessly directed by Lise Bruneau. The story of Cyrano, sad as it is, could inspire anyone to ponder the question: What kind of world would it be if love were only a matter of the soul?"
