"...As the family copes with loss the show is no darker than the mortality-streaked “Toy Story 3,” though again, the young ones might flinch at a giant Rat King apparition that Huang fashions from puppets in a moment that’s briefly redolent of Julie Taymor’s “Lion King.” It’s an in-between “Nutcracker”: between kiddie and adult, between slapstick musical and grim drama, never entirely finding its tone. But above all it aims to be therapeutic, and it may be the holiday show some folks need to see — warm, yet working frankly to thaw a dreadful frost."

the opening scene, an homage to the original ballet in that it is mainly composed of music and movement, tells the story of how a family Christmas party, full of the expectation of the return of a soldiering son, is instead crushed by the news of his demise. This short prologue is one of the more beautiful scenes of theatre I’ve seen this year, and it really showcases Joe Calarco’s talents as a director.
