"...This moment epitomizes the inspired stylized humor that Toby Mulford has woven into his portrait of Harpagon, the title character in Moliere's 1668 comedy "The Miser." First glimpsed shuffling through his home, with stooped posture, clutching the strongbox that holds his wealth, Mulford's Harpagon generates a windfall of wit for the Faction of Fools Theatre Company production, which Mulford also directed. Interpreted in the company's signature commedia dell'arte style, the show gets somewhat less comic capital from its other performers, who make bold choices and display ample confidence but lack Mulford's polished flair. Still, boasting a brisk pace, a jubilant tone and a generous endowment of gags and masks, this 90-minute "Miser" is an unusually accessible, enjoyably lively rendition of a classic. (The graceful, modern-sounding translation is by George Mulford, a scholar of French literature and Toby's father.)"

"...Faction of Fools is delightfully back with a well-concocted, refreshing, street-fair fare of Moliere's The Miser. This happy show is one with a pointed, underscored, right-on-the-surface message about the foibles of the rich and powerful. Under the disciplined direction of Toby Mulford, five actors take on almost a dozen disparate roles, both as masked and unmasked characters. It is clear that the ensemble is having a great time onstage bringing joy to their patrons."

"...Who knew that the French playwright's masterpiece would lend itself so readily to physical comedy art? Apparently the artistic designers did in selecting, and directing this no holds barred interpretation. It's a perfect combination to express the sentiment, sentimentality, mistaken identity and overall interpretation of human traits, foibles, and desires. Of all of the versions of The Miser I've seen over the years, this one stacks up as being one of the best in terms of originality, fun, warmth and style."
