There's too much ?irting going on in the town of Titipu- and it's against the law! So the Mikado, the emperor of all, decrees that heads must roll. But what can you do when love is in the air? Come find out in this fun-filled, family-friendly 70-minute re-imagination of The Mikado by Chicago-based company The Hypocrites. Expect zany fun as 10 actors (playing the instruments, too!) sing Gilbert & Sullivan's lovely, lilting songs with a folk/pop edge. (For the best experience, ask for 'promenade seats': share the stage with the actors, and find yourself part of the action!)

"...The cast is a true ensemble and a musically talented group. Their voices are uniformly strong and they play the entire score, orchestrated by Music Director Andra Velis Simon, on handheld instruments while singing, another element which adds to the show’s sense of intimacy. Each cast member plays two to three instruments throughout the show and they change instruments the way I change clothes, switching out a flute for a ukulele, a guitar for a violin without skipping a beat."

"...The performers certainly are part and parcel of the concept and the selling of it to the audience, along with the gifted designers Tom Burch (sets) and Heather Gilbert (lighting) who create the kaleidoscopic world in which the cast reenacts the tale of Titipu. Unlike traditional productions with a sizable chorus as well as the principal characters, ten actor/musicians make up the entire population of Titipu, now transported from a mythical Japan to … a carnival setting. “If you want to know who we are,” the cast sings stirringly,” We are citizens of this place!” The costumes, by designer Alison Stiple, reflect a hippy-dippy circus troupe that looks like it might break out into “Prepare Ye” or “Day by Day” from Godspell before warbling an operetta ditty."
