George Selden's beloved Newbery-winning children's book comes to musical, magical and comical life, courtesy of composer-adapter Chris Brubeck and the National Symphony Orchestra. In this sweet and funny world premiere, a little country cricket named Chester unexpectedly finds himself in New York, where his pitch-perfect chirps make him a big-city sensation. Brubeck, the son of jazz pioneer Dave, is himself a jazz and contemporary classical music innovator, who depicts Chester as a solo violin, while actors portray the cricket's pals Mario, Tucker Mouse and Harry Cat. Intended for kids ages five and older, this all-new production features a pre-show where young concertgoers can enjoy a hands-on experience with the symphony's instruments and a post-show where they can ask questions and interact with the artists.
