The Gallerist Reviews
The Gallerist

"... Using proper British accents (and wearing a few costumes in need of an ironing), Tripp’s seven-actor ensemble leads us in and out of the dual epochs; the scenes in which the times intermingle on David C. Ghatan’s representative set of stacked cages are especially smoothly handled. Schlegel and Bowers have by far the most demanding roles, made trickier by the scenes in which Selena, in “Exorcist” style, must seem to spew Iago’s verbal bile. They both hold their own in a promising piece that manages to go out on a limb, and yet still feels as if it could be allowed to venture out a little bit farther."

"... The Gallerist’s activity, whether it’s happening in the past, present, or both simultaneously, revolves around a versatile set made up of wire cages. Brian S. Allard’s lighting design heightens the play’s emotions, swelling to red during tense scenes or incorporating colored hues that stand in for Laura’s compelling paintings. The artwork is just one example of director Tripp having the restraint to withhold what’s best left to the audience’s imagination: the image of a painting with the power to trap the very essence of a creature’s soul."

"...Overall, I thought the show was directed and acted wonderfully. The only sore spot is the writers verbosity. The same phrases were used over and over again to drive a point home that is already asleep in it’s bedroom. And there is a tendency to tell the audience what is happening and what has happened - as though they are not intelligent enough to follow the story themselves. I would love to see a world where audiences are given a bit more credit, but that’s a crusade for another year."

“When Jane Goodall Goes Bad!” could be the banner headline for The Gallerist, a delectably lurid tale about demonic possession and soul survival by playwright Fengar Gael that is staged with purplish passion by Rorschach Theater.
