Her only human contacts are an indulgent father, a clumsy ex-boyfriend, and a new tutor ... who just might be able to out-smart her. "...The production owes some of its funniest and most electric moments to actor Parker Drown, who depicts Holly’s endearingly delinquent, video-game-playing ex-boyfriend, Yager. A sequence in which Yager splutteringly washes Pop Rocks down with Pepsi to see if his head will explode is priceless."

"...Holly Down in Heaven feels surprisingly global given that Holly (Maya Jackson) never leaves the basement. She’s gotten pregnant with her next-door neighbor (Parker Drown) and been born-again at Church Camp in the same month and refuses to leave the basement as penance…or something…until the baby comes. Her Father (KenYatta Rogers) lets her do it and employs a tutor (Dawn Thomas) to keep her moving towards the PSATS."

"...When the show shifts to human interaction, however, Corthron’s dialogue is convincing and well-delivered. KenYatta Rogers, as Holly’s indulgent but lonely widowed father, and Parker Drown, as the condom-challenged boy next door, round out the human cast. For all its fantastical trappings and religious vestments, Holly Down in Heaven turns out to be a show about flesh and blood relationships. By the time the show reaches its drawn-out conclusion, it becomes clear that’s both a blessing and a curse."

"...Forum Theatre’s artistic director, Michael Dove, does an excellent job creating Holly’s microcosm of the real world—the set by Steven T. Royal, spread out under a giant staircase, feels nicely cloying, and Holly’s twin bed with princess-like sheets helps underline her youth. Creepy as they might be, the dolls are the most creative part of the show, subverting stereotypes and tapping into our latent childhood fears at the same time. The performers—from Jackson as the smug, bossy Holly (“I’m God’s favorite,” she tells her tutor) to Parker Drown as Holly’s endearingly reprobate ex-boyfriend—are generally strong, enhancing the oddball humor of the production."

She is also pregnant, and a recent convert to born-again Christianity. In playwright Kara Lee Corthron’s witty new comedy,audiences follow the young expectant mother into the family basement. Stubbornly against abortion on newfound religious grounds, Holly (Maya Jackson) plans to spend nine months in evangelical exile, leaving the logistical concerns of her pregnancy to Jesus. With her doting but easily-swayed father (KenYatta Rogers), a new tutor (Dawn Thomas), and a bumbling ex-boyfriend (Parker Drown) as her only human contacts, Holly turns to her extensive doll collection as confidants.
