Brian Friel imagines a small cafe in 1920s Moscow where Sonya, Uncle Vanya's niece, is the only patron until the arrival of Andrey, brother of the Three Sisters. "Afterplay" provides a touching coda for two of Chekhov's most enduring characters. Chekhov's short story "A Little Trick" is transformed into a succinct memory play where the narrator tells of the young lady who might have been the love of his life.

"... What a wonderful little gem the Quotidian Theatre Company of Bethesda is. With performances tucked away at the Writer’s Center on Walsh Street, the decidedly unremarkable building houses a delightful theater troupe. The company ends its 2011-2012 season with homage to Anton Chekhov. Two productions are presented in the evening. The first is an adaptation of Chekhov’s short story, A Little Trick. Afterplay, by Brian Friel, presents a 20 year epilogue to Chekhov’s Uncle Vanya and the play, The Three Sisters."

"... You don't need to be intimately acquainted with all of Anton Chekhov's works to enjoy the double bill put on by the Quotidian Theatre Company. The first offering, "A Little Trick," is a translation and adaptation to the stage of a Chekhov short story. It takes place during the 19th century on "an icehill in a provincial Russian town," nicely suggested by John Decker's set design."

To clip characters helpless from the bounds of their classic works and conjure up the residue of their stories requires bravery in vision, deftness in execution, and a wholehearted love for the source material. All of these prerequisites are unequivocally met in Quotidian Theatre Company’s delightful production of Brian Friel’s Afterplay.
