"... Teenage disaffection has a more upbeat tone in “Cuchullain,” a one-actor show that — as Jenkinson’s “Basra Boy” did last year — careens through a seedy Belfast cityscape populated by vibrant eccentrics. Performer Josh Sticklin, who infused “Basra Boy” with humor and zest, is equally irresistible as the hedonistic 19-year-old Aaron, whose idea of gainful employment is doing drugs in the park and then convincing a social services office that he is mentally ill (and thus deserving of generous welfare support)."

"... The coke-snorting, alcohol-guzzling, profanity-spewing and sexually promiscuous protagonist of Cuchullain, the one-man show now playing at The Keegan Theatre, belongs to a familiar theatrical archetype: the degenerate anti-hero who compensates for his wayward shenanigans with disarming charm, charisma and bracing good humor. Aaron, the 19-year-old Irish reprobate played with obvious relish by Josh Sticklin, may not convince you that his wanton actions belie an essentially virtuous soul. But you may find him more likeable than you should."

"... Political undertones never quite come to fruition, either. References to the conflicts between the “Mickies” and the Loyalists (Aaron’s side) and even a scene that involves flag stealing don’t seem to lead anywhere other than providing a snapshot of the tense political climate in the city, which seems like a missed opportunity. Like issues raised throughout the rest of the production, not only does the topic lack resolution, it lacks the opportunity to even address the questions that might lead to it. Maybe that’s what they were going for, but as a theatergoer, the pattern was unsatisfying to say the least. For a production inspired in part by mythology, it’s hardly the stuff of legend."
