The Miracle Worker, directed by Lucinda Merry-Browne, Compass Rose’s founder and Artistic Director, tells the true story of Helen Keller’s discovery of language. Helen Keller was blind and deaf from infancy. The Kellers, a wealthy Southern family, desperately sought a cure for their daughter. In their utmost despair, they looked to a school in the North where they found Annie Sullivan, a poor student. In this wonderful play, Annie travels south to live with the Kellers and attempts to tame Helen’s wildness and educate her. The play focuses around Annie’s determination to reach Helen by any means and find the key to unlock the mystery of language for young Helen. In helping Helen, Annie finds love in herself. The play is spellbinding and will touch the hearts of all.

"... Gibson adopted the play from his 1957 teleplay, relying on the generous resources available to Broadway shows in that era instead of sharpening the material. So, on the page, “The Miracle Worker” has more moving parts than it needs, and if anything it’s well-served because director Lucinda Merry-Browne, working with a limited budget and a tiny stage, has had to trim some extras. Any sight or mention of Helen’s infant sister Mildred is gone; so is a stuffy Keller aunt who keeps showing up in the script, to little effect —the play works just as well with her important lines and stage business parceled out to others."

"... For a story heavy with tragic possibility, this one offers a surprising amount of humor. Opening night’sfull house had rousing applause for the troupe,despite some muffed lines. The soundtrack is lifted from Yo-Yo Ma,Edgar Meyer and Mark O’Connor’s classicallyinfused Appalachian Waltzalbum, which is terrific, but some background birds and crickets could have spiced upthe monotonyof Annie’s soliloquies. The set and furnishings are minimal, but with an impressive pump whose inexhaustible supply of water fascinated all present.

The most believable parts of the play are the scenes in which Annie stubbornly sticks to her guns in taming Helen’s wild anger. She clearly recognizes it as frustration with not having the ability to communicate and that the remedy lies in discipline and persistence. Sixth grader Annalie Ellis is a completely convincing Helen and her transformation at the end of the show should bring tears by the buckets.
