The Broadway musical, starring Mary Martin and Theo Bikel, was released in 1959, and was written by Richard Rodgers and Oscar Hammerstein II. The 1965 movie, with Julie Andrews and Christopher Plummer, made its songs even more popular: "The Sound of Music", "Edelweiss", "My Favorite Things", "Climb Ev'ry Mountain" and "Do-Re-Mi" are much loved standards today. The play, an adaptation of the memoir of Maria Von Trapp, The Story of the Von Trapp Singers, follows the Von Trapp family who meet Maria, a nun turned governess, who brings the family together through the power of song in the hills and mountainsides of Salzburg, Austria, just before World War II.
