Its current offering, a revival of George Bernard Shaw’s “Arms and the Man,” is the kind of unremarkable production you’d expect to encounter in the repertory of a fussy little troupe in some provincial outpost where the pastor’s bored wife needs a pastime."

"... Ultimately, Constellation's Arms and the Man is more than the sum of its parts because of the strong acting team Constellation has assembled. Amy Quiggins, for example, isn't the only one playing over-the-top. In fact, Mark Krawczyk outdoes her, playing her fiancé Saranoff as a macho and flamboyant toy soldier who's both obnoxious and irresistible. And Michael John Casey and Brynn Tucker as the Petkoff maid Louka both are convincing as the play's centers of gravity."

Constellation Theatre Company’s production of Arms and the Man plays up the funny frolic aspect of the satire, with bright costumes and a clever set, while missing the bitter pill hidden in the "chocolate-cream soldier" dream of its lead character. That isn’t to say it isn’t delightful, it just needs more Shavian snap."

"... Exaggerated, imprecise acting is a barrier to enjoying this production, directed by Allison Arkwell Stockman. Some press-night line flubs will surely be corrected, but you’re still left with a show that’s rarely laugh-out-loud funny, which is exactly what a Shaw comedy should be."

"... Director, Allison Arkell Stockman chooses to strike the pitch of the production exceptionally high. Mark Krawczyk is appropriate and engaging in this mode. The actors play their parts in bold farcical style, with the exception of Michael John Casey, who acts more organically. He does balance out the frenzy, as does Chris Mancusi, in this small black box theatre, providing relief from the high-pitched tenor of the other actors. Amy Quiggins initially presents a charming and endearing effect as Raina, but her performance is obstructed by the extremes she delivers in voice and action. One wishes for more of a variation in the performances, a balance so that themes of romanticism, class and the idealization of war, the director obviously strives for, may be attained, and resonate in today’s militaristic climate."

The socialist Shaw was never afraid to debunk conventional mores and he used wit and words-words-words to get not only his antiwar message across but loaded his verbal canons against the societal norms of gender and class. Constellation Theatre is a company that likewise never shies away from epic themes and big ideas, and here director Allison Arkell Stockman and her ensemble of talented actors go full charge.
