"... Director Sean Daniels and his creative team deliver some cheeky humor with their science lessons. The rundown on the solar system, for instance, takes the form of a colorful pageant, complete with signature music for each celestial body. (Move over, Gustav Holst!) When Dr. Wonderful and her team voyage past Mercury, the planet closest to the sun, for instance, composer Lowdermilk delivers sultry Caribbean tones and rhythms, and the spirit of the planet (Mora again) prances onstage in a Carmen Miranda-style fruit-bedecked headpiece. Another mini-scene —about the moon — showcases Mora in a fedora, moonwalking like Michael Jackson to a “Thriller”-esque beat."

"... A bright, colorful set, designed by Misha Kachman, shows the perfect blend of a youthful bedroom and a makeshift laboratory. Finger paintings of famous scientists cover the walls, as well as a giant telescope, a scattering of toys, and a whiteboard that has equations scribbled on it, as well as playful doodles of hearts and a smiling sun. Costume designer Kathleen Geldard dresses the characters in suitable casual wear, with the exception of lab coats, and Newton is given a dog-like appearance with corduroy overalls, a handkerchief around his neck…and a tail."

If family theatre ratings, like Olympic diving, included a degree of difficulty factor, the Kennedy Center premiere of The Amazing Adventures of Dr. Wonderful and her Dog! would earn a very high score. It’s not easy to tackle the scientific method and solar fusion in a musical for children ages six and up.
