We meet Vivian Bearing, a middle-aged English professor as she comes to grips with a life-threatening disease. Her professional study of the poetry of John Donne, a contemporary of Shakespeare, provides illuminating counterpoint to her personal journey. From Vivian, we learn about life, death and the American medical system. Illuminating and inspiring are words frequently used to describe this experience. Wit is an opportunity to become more human as you suspend your disbelief!

"...Margaret Edson's Pulitzer Prize-winning play (1999) Wit, now receiving a powerful revival at The Bay Theatre Company (to 11/6), is as much an examination of two belief systems as it is two different approaches to life and death. On the one hand, we have Renaissance scholarship abutting the practice of medicine - C.P. Snow's The Two Cultures, with science now ascendant. On the other hand, there's the method of how we go after that certainty: How do we acquire knowledge, gain wisdom, and transfer it - teach? Is it through rigor, discipline, punishing exactitude - tough love - or is it in calibrated, patient (or student)-administered doses, with time for reflection and growth?"

Margaret Edson’s Pulitzer Prize-winning play, fluidly directed by Richard Pilcher, is a dying professor’s “The Last Lecture” of a less obviously inspiring and exuberant nature than Randy Pausch’s. Vivian’s methodology for her cancer and treatment combines withering wit and detachment and she expects her students—here, the audience—to do the same.
