And the drama is an internal storm where integrity clashes with philosophical rationalizations, alcohol, and literary analysis. It’s not at all what the viewer thinks it will be.

"...Randall’s mission focuses on the stories of women and children, and the European Mavroudi’s “Stenographer” is not a bad find. Mavroudi bravely writes this as an unbroken encounter in real time, and a few of the play’s insights creep up on you nicely. But belabored and ponderous are the words for the denouement as the play’s title gives its ending away."

"...Mavroudi built several stakes-raising, book-throwing revelations into the script, but neither actor can shift gears. In the end, parallel plots of the play, novel, and the novelist’s life fit together as neatly as a set of Russian dolls. Give Mavroudi an A in Playwrighting 101, but The Stenographer is still a college drama."

"...Do not expect a wild ride through cathartic fire in this show, though. This, another play at Venus directed by Deborah Randall, Artistic Director and primary force of this noble little theatre company, was designed to provide thought for dealing with our sins – thought more than pity. The writer and stenographer relationship which inevitably kindles between these two figures, who, left nameless beyond mere descriptors of “professor” and “girl”, might be any of us."

When a play features a formerly philandering, angst-ridden and self-absorbed professor bringing home an exotic dancer who he spends the entire evening lecturing to on the life and works of Dostoevsky before asking of her the most decidedly non-sexual favor you can ask of anyone, you just might find freshness yet.
