This fresh re-envisioning of Williams’ legendary masterpiece and most autobiographical work is presented as part of the Tennessee Williams Centennial Festival. The production of this haunting memory play, filled with fragility and stifled yearning, features Sarah Marshall as Amanda Wingfield. Offered as part of the partnership between Arena Stage at the Mead Center for American Theater and Georgetown University, the production and surrounding events are presented at Arena Stage following a run at Georgetown.

Georgetown University is celebrating the stuffing out of Williams’s breakthrough drama at Arena Stage: It has not only fully staged the play but has added lobby installations and free short productions. It’s a mini-semester’s worth of attractions."

"...Rachel Caywood, a recent Georgetown graduate, is well cast as a fragile and quietly tragic Laura. Jim O’Connor, played with great verve and aplomb by Michael Mitchell, is riveting as the well-meaning, conceited, and obtuse gentleman caller. Sarah Marshall steals the show. She fully inhabits the role of former Southern belle turned scrappy, indomitable hustler. The broad planes of her accent are wonderful and with every gesture she solidifies Amanda’s character of gentility and steel. Even at her most domineering, she is lovable. Clark Young, as Tom, shifts convincingly between love for his family and restless longing. He is tense, explosive, and by turns tender and brooding."

will confess I went thinking I certainly knew the work and didn’t necessarily need to see another production. I was surprised and delighted that these most able performers under the very capable direction of Derek Goldman, gave us a stirling production, professional in every degree. The four performers, Sarah Marshall, Rachel Caywood, Michael Mitchell, and Clark Young, got the balance deliciously right in their portrayal of this family.
