Joe Bonaparte sets aside his dream of becoming a violinist for the promise of a lucrative boxing career. As his fame soars, Joe finds himself torn between the lure of big money and the distinct possibility of injuring his hands and permanently destroying his musical career. He is surrounded by pressure and desires that are not always his own -- from his immigrant father to his manager Tom Moody, to Tom’s girlfriend Lorna Moon, with whom Joe falls in love, everyone wants a piece of The Golden Boy. Clifford Odets biggest hit, Golden Boy was made into a 1939 film of the same name, starring William Holden in the role that would make him a star.

"...With its high-stakes dilemmas and atmospheric period diction ("For Pete's sake, use your noodle!") the story could seem melodramatic or dated, but Gardner and her actors (most of them) locate realism and immediacy from beat to beat."

"...It's an unbalanced production, however, with only about half the performers able to convincingly handle their roles. Although the play takes place in New York City, many of the characters don't sound like New Yorkers. Lee Mikeska Gardner directs with a sense of stark realism in keeping with Odets' style, but the play moves at a medium slow pace, with the result that it often drags, leaving the observer to wonder if absolute fidelity to style is the best way to represent a work written many decades ago."

"...The best that can be said for Lee Mikeska Gardner’s earnest, hardworking production for the Keegan Theatre is that it’s no clunkier than the play itself. That the chops to be a contender in both sweet science and the symphony ought to be something we can accept as mere setup. Unfortunately, the casting only underscores its implausibility: As Joe, John Robert Keena is called upon to shadowbox only a little and to fiddle even less. The most charitable way of assessing his prowess at either endeavor would be to say they make his acting seem credible by comparison."

But if Noir as a genre works for you, and you want to see more than a classic on its feet, Golden Boy is a winner by unanimous audience decision, as evidenced at Sunday's 12/5 bout. This being a Clifford Odets play, told with tender humanism, we see our own lives right away in the plight of the young boxer. We’re a ways from Joe’s world now – times have changed since New York City in 1934 – but it’s just a different chapter in the same big book: how the youth of America struggles to live up to, and shatter, the hopes of their parents.
