"... Director Ellen Dempsey doesn’t take a lot of chances with “One Night With Fanny Brice.” She lets Covington come down into the audience twice and sing directly to the audience, but for the rest of the show she is center stage, her pianist behind her, delivering her songs from the same vantage point."

"...As a single-performer vehicle, One Night with Fanny Brice does fall into the "and-then-I-wrote" trap. Fanny, assisted by pianist Tom Fuller, intersperses her songs with stories about her eventful life: father's drinking problem, stern mother, life in burlesque and vaudeville, a very brief early marriage, and the years with the crook she loved, Nick Arnstein."

"...As a result, instead of coming away from this show with the feeling that you have spent the evening with Fanny Brice, you come away feeling you have had an informative briefing on her life illustrated with samples of the songs she used to cast her spell. Just what that spell was, however, remains a mystery. The briefing is consistently interesting and occasionally entertaining but is rarely compelling and hardly ever thrilling. It certainly wouldn’t earn or maintain the status of "star" for Miss Brice."
