"..."Rent" succeeds on several levels in its exuberant appeal to the young while lending insight to older viewers who might admire the freedom of contemporary bohemian life. Admirers of Puccini's "La Boheme" will find several artistic parallels, especially among characters Roger and Mimi. Their love mirrors that of Mimi and Rodolfo, though composer Jonathan Larson's music never soars as Puccini's does, but instead conveys with edgy rock Roger's reluctance to leap into a committed relationship. Inextricably blended with jealous wariness are the lovers' desperate struggles with HIV and drug dependence — problems more relevant today than the consumption afflicting Puccini's Mimi."

If you missed seeing Rent when it occupied New York City’s Nederlander Theatre from 1996 through 2008 (over 5,000 performances), or during the numerous national tours, then I highly recommend seeing this amazing musical, winner of the 1996 Tony for Best Musical, now marvelously presented by Toby’s Dinner Theater of Columbia."

"...The trouble is, with the sound situation, you can only count on picking up about 60% of the words. And the missing 40% may contain major exposition. Toby's Columbia is a theater-in-the-round. In some ways, particularly in a show like this, that's a great thing. There are moments when the songs call for the members of the ensemble to feed off each other's energy, and, with them perched on towers at the four cardinal points of the room, facing each other, you can feel the dynamic interplay. But on the other hand, this means that about half the lines sung by the major characters are going to be sung facing largely or wholly away from you. Add to that that the orchestra, though not inordinately loud, often drowns out key consonants in a lyric, no matter how well sung. The result: if the mikes aren't picking up and the sound system delivering every detail (and here they're not), words will be and are lost. If you basically know them already, that's no big deal. If you don't, it is."
