Written just before the stock market crash of 1929, Holiday follows the whirlwind romance of Johnny Case and Julia Seton, eldest daughter of a prominent New York family. When Johnny announces he wants to “retire early and work late” sparks fly, igniting younger sister, Linda, who longs to break out and pursue a dream of her own. Barry’s sophisticated comedy elegantly explores the clash of love and money, eerily preceding the financial doom that will force millions to examine their greed and humanity.

"...But with "Holiday," McAndrews and her performers seem to have bitten off more than they can chew. The play cries out for suavity, brisk pacing, crisp repartee and a sense that its privileged characters own the world -- or at least a good chunk of Manhattan. But as they flounder through Barry's dialogue, the visibly uncomfortable figures here don't even seem to own the cheap-looking white-walled set, which represents an Upper East Side mansion on the eve of the Great Depression."

"...Julia is portrayed skillfully by Sophia Bushong, who moved to Washington, D.C., last spring after a decade of acting in New York City. Allison Leigh Corke, in her 1st Stage debut since moving here from Atlanta after a yearlong contract with the Georgia Shakespeare repertory troupe, embodies Linda. The play is overseen by Dawn McAndrews, with more than 15 years as director -- including last season's "Three Days of Rain" at 1st Stage -- and theater educator. Special attention should also go to 1st Stage co-founder Cheryl Patton Wu for the elegance of the period costumes -- the flapper-era look, the vintage gowns and formal wear, the men in sharp-looking vests, the women in beads and fringe and head-wraps -- and for the rich appointments of the set furnishings, on loan from the Versailles Gallery in Vienna."

This plan is a surprise to his heiress fiancée, a delight to her rebellious sister, and an anathema to her wealthy banker father. Such is the plot behind Philip Barry’s Holiday, a classic theatrical chestnut that receives a pleasant but understated production from 1st Stage.
