On a beautiful Saturday afternoon, wealthy underwear merchant John Tarleton, his wife, and his two adult children host a small party at their country estate. His daughter Hypatia brings her prospective husband, a wimpy yet well-meaning son of an aristocrat. When an airplane crash brings unexpected visitors, Hypatia reconsiders her choice for a mate.

"...It has frequently been argued that the characters in "Misalliance" (originally dubbed "a debate in one sitting") sound suspiciously like Shaw himself, but of course that's no way to play it. The comedy really is filled with distinctive characters; the buoyant Tarleton and his reserved fellow eminence Lord Summerhays -- Bentley's rueful father -- are woefully humiliated by much younger (and dissimilar) women, for instance. But the dialogue is volleyed with such sterile polish that all hope and pain are abandoned."

The Olney Theatre Center opened its colorful new production of George Bernard Shaw’s rollicking screwball comedy Misalliance this past weekend. We found Saturday evening’s performance visually striking and earnestly performed. But alas, it’s lacking, thus far at least, in the kind of acting necessary to bring this sparkling, argumentative classic fully to life.

"...The Olney production, ably directed by John Going, illustrates in crystalline fashion Shaw's sunny conviction that there would an absence of both successful humbug and personal misalliances under the laboratory conditions of a sunroom into which anyone could crash. In our actual world, unions concocted without the aid of Shavian sunroom, as Shaw famously observes in the play, no matter whether arranged or for love, are all equally iffy propositions. Real-life commoners and pashas did not mingle in real-life sunrooms of Shaw's era or any other, and, if they had, social convention would have prevented the inhabitants interbreeding for Shaw's program of betterment of the species."
