"...It's amazing how quickly and convincingly the three films fly by, and Ross hits the major plot points, while teasing the audience with amusing asides -- why is Arwin's fate inexplicably tied to the ring? Liv Tyler-related contractual obligations, natch -- and slight editorial tweaks here and there. He's a master of the physical, throwing himself around the stage as swords clash and Orcs ravage (and Woolly has surely gotten him a better mic at this point, as issues with his amplification plagued him throughout Tuesday's show). Only a few jokes feel obligatory, but come on -- is he supposed to not make a reference to Frodo and Sam's homoerotic love?"

"..Certainly there’s no arguing that this is a riveting display of talent – guided by the direction of longtime collaborator TJ Dawe, Ross goes through a rapid array of transformations both vocal and physical. But is a knowledge of the films necessary to enjoy it? Has too much time passed since the films’ worldwide success? Ross asked those questions himself at the end of the performance I attended, with humble self-deprecation. The response, however, was overwhelmingly positive from both the hardcore LOTR fans and those who had managed to never see them or even read the books. It was a hypnotic and hilarious evening."

Unlike his "Star Wars," this new work is not being offered as part of the Capital Fringe Festival. But the follow-up is just as gleefully Fringe-worthy, so those who know their way around Middle-earth would be well advised to detour from the official venues and catch Ross in his tickling solo act."

"...While not necessarily a weakness, it’s worth noting your understanding of the performance will be directly proportional to your familiarity with the story. Let me put it this way: do you remember Denethor’s poor table manners when he has Pippin sing during the battle of Minas Tirith? No? Then One Man Lord of the Rings isn’t the show for you. Sure, Ross interjects clever pop culture references and obligatory gay jokes, but I’m certain you’ll be confused if you’ve only seen the movies once. On the other hand, Ross’ work is so good you may want to refresh your Middle-earth memories beforehand. After One Man Star Wars and now this, I feel comfortable saying he is the reigning master of comically spastic reductive storytelling."
