Joe Keller and Herbert Deever were partners in a machine shop during World War II that turned out defective airplane parts, causing the deaths of many men. Deever was sent to prison, while Keller escaped punishment and went on to freedom and financial success. Years later, Joe’s surviving son Chris embarks on a love affair with Herbert’s daughter, Ann, setting of a string of encounters and admissions that will change all of their lives forever. A devastating work of tremendous and timeless truth, All My Sons established Arthur Miller as a leading voice in the American theater, winning the Drama Critics' Award for Best New Play in 1947.

"... In one forceful scene, young World War II veteran Chris Keller (Kevin Hasser) sits on a porch step, talking to his fiancee, Ann (Brianna Letourneau). Just moments ago, the two were shyly reveling in their new love. But now Chris veers into brooding bitterness. His expression darkens; his voice grows angry. Gesturing jerkily with one raised hand, he explains to Ann that, on the military front, a new sense of responsibility seemed to be binding humans together, “man for man.” But, back in the United States, he found that the business “rat race” was ongoing and “nobody was changed at all.”"

"... Do not let the deceptive simplicity of the stunning set design (by Mark Johnson) – replete with lush greenery, white picket fences and flower boxes – fool you into thinking you are taking a trip to a Norman Rockwell painting, for The Keegan Theatre’s current production of All My Sons plunges assuredly into the psychological world of Arthur Miller. Very solidly executed on all levels, this intimate work of Miller still holds much relevance for issues that we are still dealing with today and is an interesting precursor to themes that are developed further in his later plays. The Keegan Theatre has been presenting outstanding ensemble work in the past seasons and this production certainly continues the run of quality fare."

"...There are minor flaws here and there with Keegan's production, such as Erin Nugent's uneven costumes, which aren't always as effective in capturing the post-war period as they are in Chris's sharp getup throughout, or in Ann's demure dresses. But the flaws all come down to style, not substance. Fortunately, the substance on offer is enough to sustain your thoughts for days afterward."

The men onstage handle the particularly masculine American pressure of social expectation versus the debilitating weight of an often disappointing reality—a struggle Miller also explored in later works such as Death of a Salesman and The Crucible—admirably. Before the world addressed what we would now call PTSD, when men were expected to maintain a stiff upper lip in the face of battles overseas or within their own consciences, all that pent-up emotion took a definitive toll. And it’s capturing that quietly tortured and sometimes explosive mentality that make Miller’s script so arresting. This interpretation grasps those qualities with a largely steady hand, and it pays off. And in a deeply divided climate that’s hammered what is expected of us as Americans into a sometimes petty oblivion, it’s a fitting reminder of the dangerous consequences of those pressures that can linger for years to come."

"... Much of the strength of this nearly two and a half hour production is due largely to its strong ensemble cast. Kevin Adams, for example, is affable as family patriarch, Joe Keller. Often punctuating lines with a haughty laugh or good-natured pat on the back, Adams portrays a husband and father who just wants to keep the mood light and his family happy. When Joe Keller’s sketchy past comes back to haunt him, it is Adams’ winsome portrayal of this flawed character that elicits sympathy rather than disdain or indifference from the audience."

Miller was a master at spinning out plots that build slowly, pick up speed and finally careen out of control as new discoveries expose the inevitable outcomes of human weakness and frailty. Many playwrights, American and otherwise, have been successful at coming up with well contrived plots.
