Set in Haiti in the early 20th Century, ISLAND follows the story's young heroine, Ti Moune, as she uses the power of love and storytelling to bring together a community torn apart by racial and economic difference. Full of capricious gods, island magic, and joyous dance numbers, Olney's production is directed by Alan Muraoka, proprietor of Sesame Street's Hooper's Store since 1997.

"...With a little make-believe, the set by Milagros Ponce de Leon shifts easily from the opening storm shelter (with lights flickering ominously at the top of the show) to a wind-blown island of trees and debris. The storm theme seems to have informed Helen Huang’s colorful makeshift costumes, too. There is a calming simplicity at work; Muraoka’s show never strains for effects."

Once on this Island, the diverting Caribbean-themed musical running at Olney Theatre Center through May 4, is more than just a pastel-colored stroll through island culture to a calypso beat. Of Calypso there is plenty, and the strong cast delivers the musical’s 19 numbers, ranging from upbeat, Broadway-style ensemble pieces to solo ballads, with soul and timing.
