Winner of five Tony Awards, including Best Musical, Man of La Mancha retells the timeless tale of Miguel Cervantes' Don Quixote as a play within a play. Cervantes re-enacts his story of the mad knight, a dying old man who lives in a world of his imagination as he awaits his hearing in the Spanish Inquisition. The show features a treasure trove of some of the greatest songs to come out of Broadway, including "Dulcinea," "I'm Only Thinking of Him," "I Really Like Him" and the anthemic "The Impossible Dream."

"...If the Shakespeare Theatre Company’s musicals are going to be this good — and this is only the second they’ve fully produced at Harman Hall — they may as well keep a hand in the game. The classical rationale for “La Mancha” is that Miguel de Cervantes and Shakespeare were contemporaries and that “Don Quixote,” the inspiration for “La Mancha,” is a cornerstone of Western literature. But there’s another justification: Artistic director Michael Kahn has always set the bar high for performance on his stages, and his young protégé, “La Mancha” director and STC associate artistic director Alan Paul, upholds that standard here."

"...Here, unfortunately, director Alan Paul does not get it right. One minute we are in a quaintly-rendered world in which Don Quixote is bouncing around on a horse fashioned from a bucket and mop and the next we are watching a woman being by turns mauled, spread-eagled, gagged and kicked. As the suspension bridge of belief collapses, the questions fall like cars: how offensive is this going to get? Will there be nudity? What does this have to do with Don Quixote? When in God’s name is this scene going to end?"

"...After seeing and experiencing the Shakespeare Theatre Company's production, directed dynamically and unerringly by Alan Paul, I can say without reservation that I've never seen a better production than this one. Even while hewing fairly closely to the look and feel of other productions, Paul, a splendid group of designers and an outstanding cast have given the audience a production that looks and feels as fresh as it surely was in 1968 when the Lew Wasserman scripted play debuted on Broadway and won a Tony for best musical, with another Tony going to Richard Kiley in the lead."

"...The strongest element in the production is clearly Anthony Warlow. The Australian musical and opera singer is a gifted actor with a rich voice, who did justice to the triple roles of Cervantes/Don Quixote/Don Quixana. There were moments Warlow seemed more a Lear than a Quixote—bobbing his head more like a doddering fool than a madman—but overall, he would have shone if surrounded by a greater number of other strong performances and more-restrained directorial choices."

Anthony Warlow plays the eponymous Man of La Mancha, both as Cervantes and his creation Don Quixote, and Warlow perfects with consummate professionalism director Alan Paul’s vision of a ready made performance in a 17th century Spanish prison. Locked up for foreclosing on a church, Warlow’s Cervantes is put on a pre-Inquisition trial by his new fellow prisoners, who accuse him of being an idealist and bad poet. In his defense, Cervantes takes on the character of his most famous character and directs the prisoners in a makeshift production of his work, the manuscript of which the other prisoners threaten to burn. In his transformation of Cervantes into Quixote and prison into playhouse, Warlow exemplifies the skeuomorph in one beautiful moment, making this crisply executed and intricate production feel like the best of what Peter Brook called “the Rough Theater.”
