Madama Butterfly

Madama Butterfly

The Lyric
140 W. Mt Royal Ave Baltimore

Puccini's Madama Butterfly is one of the most beautiful -- and one of the most tragic -- operas ever staged. It's the story of an innocent young geisha who catches the eye of an American Naval officer and becomes his temporary "wife," only to be left behind when he returns to America. What began as a beautiful love story becomes a heartbreaking tragedy when the abandoned bride must make an agonizing choice. The role of "Madama Butterfly" offers young divas the opportunity to perform one of the most famous arias in the soprano repertoire, "Un bel di," sung as Butterfly waits faithfully for her lover to return from across the sea. The opera is fully staged in the original Italian, with English translation projected above the stage.
