In an inner-city high school, the daughter of Chinese immigrants falls for the son of a combative African-American family. But when he’s suddenly swallowed up by the system, their desires go in desperate new directions. Re-united six years later, can the lovers build a life together now that their innocence is gone? Lights Rise on Grace—named Outstanding Play for its workshop at the New York Fringe—is a hot-blooded stage event that has been exposed to its theatrical bones: an examination of race, sexuality, and family as unconventional as the relationships it depicts.

"...Both are compellingly drawn, offering provocative and engaging issues, and each is entangled with the other, but despite the tribute paid to Grace’s final epiphany, neither character surfaces convincingly as a true protagonist. Without this choice, there is a weakness in the play’s overall impact. The stories of Grace and Large feel separate but equal and one’s engagement is similarly divided. Granted, to emphasize one of the stories would have forced Beckim to take a single perspective — and clearly he is loyal to both characters — but choosing one perspective would have given the audience far more to grasp."

"...The play—poetic, crude, raw and wholly imaginative—is what audiences might call a “Woolly” play, even though it had its beginning as a New York Fringe Festival entry. It seems carved out of the time of now, it’s unlike anything you’re quite likely to see here (no disrespect to other companies meant), it’s beautifully acted and totally engaging. The faces—three remarkably gifted actors—are new, and so is the spirit of the play and its structure, which seem beyond category."

It begins like Romeo and Juliet, (an observation a character also makes): Large (DeLance Minefee), an African-American teenager, and Grace (Jeena Yi), a young woman of Chinese origin, fall in love. Their families are outraged and disgusted. Large’s boozehound father (Ryan Barry) bellows his contempt, and his hideous brother (Yi) makes threats. Grace’s rigid and bigoted parents (Barry and Minefee) heap shame and threats on her.
