She takes on her character who is entombed in the earth up to her chest in Act I and in Act II finds herself swallowed by sand up to her neck. Robinette spends her time before us as a sad eyed prophet with long bursts of optimism and a bright smile to carry her through her sun-lit, yet dreary day. No matter the nature of her miserable day, it is a happy day that she conjures in her mind even as tears are so close."

The human condition which Beckett illuminates in Happy Days is loneliness, and specifically the loneliness of a long-term relationship. Winnie doesn’t care that Willie mostly ignores her whinnying; it is sufficient that he has ears upon which her voice might fall. Outside of her husband she has only her handbag and her memories. Upon her handbag she lavishes almost human affection; she refers to her gun as “Brownie” and talks about it as though it were an old friend.
