"...Because "Girlstar" is all over the place and nowhere, all at once. From the initial scene, when Migliaccio's Daniella Espere sings a peculiar number called "One Eye Open" while holding a hand over one of her eyes, until late in the proceedings, when she is in Daniella's spooky lair, wrestling with a rubber snake, the production is rife with moments that make for inadvertent howlers. And Dudley's dialogue sometimes cements the impression, as when Oakley's distraught Tina finally realizes how she has come about her teen idol gifts."

"...Tween and teen girls who fantasize about pop music stardom might be the perfect audience for Girlstar, the musical in a world premiere production at MAX Theatre at Signature Theatre in Arlington, Virginia. Otherwise, a juicy performance by Donna Migliaccio is not enough to compensate for the confused plotting in this tale of success and magic by Anton Dudley (book and lyrics) and Brian Feinstein (music)."

"...Promised to be a show where "The Voice meets Maleficent," Girlstar has all the pizzaz-the lights, live orchestra, fantastic costuming, some fun special effects, and great actors. Unfortunately, what it doesn't seem to have is a good book to pull from. Even Girlstar's stellar cast couldn't quite give the book the magic kiss of life."
