Alfred Hitchcock based his much-loved thriller on Knott’s deliriously spine-tingling play about a former tennis star, Tony Wendice, who has married sweet and unsuspecting Margot for her money. He arranges what he thinks is the perfect murder, but when the plot goes wrong, Inspector Hubbard from Scotland Yard (Olney Theatre stage veteran Alan Wade) – along with her old flame, the murder mystery novelist Max Halliday – mount a hair-raising investigation that comes down to the last possible, chilling moment.

"...The acting is easy and light (Jason King Jones directs) as Kent's long scenes detail the murder scheme. Ashley Smith is a sly liar in Milland's former role, Nisi Sturgis is smooth and slightly fragile as the would-be victim and Cameron McNary is an appealing straight arrow as the lover. James Konicek plays the man blackmailed into attempting the murder with insouciance that blanches nicely when the penny drops, and Alan Wade couldn't be more methodical as the unimposing detective who asks all the right questions."

"...Even if you saw the movie version, the building drama and tension will leave you at the edge of your seat. The play has its share of blackmail, greed, jealousy, deception and a considerable amount of brandy consumed by the characters. Keys, love letters, stockings, hand bags, an attache case, scissors, and a rotary telephone all play a hand in this edgy mystery with a little dose of well-placed comedy sprinkled throughout."
