With 25 years passing in between acts, society morphs, but not as much as one might think. "...The acting pops so sharply in part because Kahn sets the stage so simply. Set designer Luciana Stecconi unfurls painted settings at the back of the stage - silhouetted giraffes on the African savanna for Act 1, a simple tree in a park for Act 2. Frank Labovitz's costumes are telling and unobtrusive as the era shifts from corsets to jeans."

"...You’re likely to struggle to keep things straight — in every sense of the term. From a rather dry and droll start as a comedy of manners, Cloud 9 reveals itself to be more than a straightforward satire of Victorian-era traditions and mores, or even that of race relations and patriarchal attitudes in the British Empire. Focusing on a British family, it scrambles details in intriguing mix-ups of gender, race, sexuality, age, even time. Centuries separate the first and second acts. The first is set in a British colony in Africa, the second in 1979 London, yet only 25 years have lapsed in the lives of the characters who carry over from the two acts: Siblings Edward and Victoria and their mother Betty, who by Act II is separated from her opressive husband, family patriarch Clive. All three grow and look dramatically different from act to act, played by a different actor in each."

"...None of this insight would be possible, though, without the superb, sensitive, intelligent, and wholly authentic production Kahn and Studio Theatre gives this great play. Within a few moments, the unconventional casting lays itself aside; Fenner is really Betty, a woman who doubts her own adequacy as she strives to do her duty by pleasing her husband. Harris is a twelve-year-old boy who cannot tear himself from his dolls, who loves and hates and fears his father, and above all does not wish to become him. Jones becomes the most pallid of English dowagers, radiating a haughty contempt for all things African. And so on."
