Forum Theatre performs Dan Dietz's Clementine in the Lower 9, the winner of a prestigious 2011 Edgerton New Plays Award. When Hurricane Katrina tore through New Orleans, Clementine's family scattered to the winds. Nine months later, they are reunited and anxious to rebuild -- but a new storm is brewing. Her husband has arrived from Houston with a strange young girl, who just may be a prophet, and the ghosts of those lost are awakening. Set to the jazz and blues of the Lower Ninth Ward, this modern retelling of Agamemnon delves into the agony and hope that come after the storm.

"...Director Derek Goldman's actors are completely convincing. Caroline Stefanie Clay radiates maternal strength as Clementine, and Thony Mena shows a nice touch with prickly indignation as Reginald. Jeff Allin has a jazzman's ease as Jaffy, and in the nearly wordless role of Cassy, Megan Graves creates a shrinking, spooky presence."

"...Whereas the Agamemnon tragedy wrestled with the tensions between family and war, and the difficult choices the individual must make and suffer in that arena, Clementine in the Lower 9 ironically focuses on the tensions between family and art, or in this case family and music. If playwright Dietz had elected to delve into that tension with more nuance and insight, accepting the challenge his Katrina / Agamemnon tragic parallel demands, the idea might have been more successful."

Dietz’s real triumph comes from the skillful blending of setting, characters, and music. The wonderful disarray and deterioration of Lisi Stoessel’s set is a convincing portrayal of a damaged home in the Lower Ninth Ward where the breaking of the levees caused the most damage. It is an inspired setting for studying a damaged family trying to pull it together.
