A world premiere, dark comedy by artistic director John Morogiello. Saint Leonard, Maryland, 1868, two businessmen condemn the shack of a waterman to make a killing on a railroad venture. But the waterman plans to make a killing of his own. Add a daughter with a thirst for danger and a mother desperate to see her married off, and you have an explosive examination of American progress and the right to be left alone.

"...Civilizing Lusby by the Best Medicine Rep Theater Company is easily worthy of the Kennedy Center. This play written by John Morogiello and directed by Kathleen Barth somehow makes existing tropes new. Almost immediately into the performance, you realize this is no just-fine play with well-meaning but not excellent performances: this is a tour-de-force of performance and playwriting, aided by Morogiello's casting as the mononymous protagonist Preston. Civilizing Lusby at the Writer's Center is the best theatrical performance I've seen in a long time."

"...A lone man taking on a developer to keep his property. A woman being courted by a man of means favored by her parents and a rogue. A couple whose prosperous appearance masks deep insecurity, secrets, and recriminations. These are all familiar elements, perhaps even cliches, but in Best Medicine Repertory's new play "Civilizing Lusby," they are given new life in a funny and engaging production."
