Escape with Rosalind into the Forest of Arden, a world where desire is turned upside-down, women disguise themselves as men and "love is merely a madness." As You Like It boasts one of Shakespeare's most vibrant heroines in Rosalind, the beautiful daughter of an exiled duke who falls madly in love with the dashing Orlando. When she's banished from the duke's court, Rosalind disguises herself as a boy and flees to the forest. Along the way, she, Orlando and a host of other motley characters fill the forest of Arden with music, dancing and pure romance. Enchantment abounds in this new production from Folger Theatre in D.C., presented in association with the Hudson Valley Shakespeare Festival.

"...Upchurch's secret sauce seems to be an audience on stage. When Jaques or Touchstone speak, Upchurch's cast are attentive and present, modeling a good audience. Even the full cast musical numbers often come from genres with a rich history of communal performance. It feels like every cast member is an audience member until they find a moment to join in on a song they have heard and played a hundred times before. And so this show shines where others cut or drag."

"...As a comedy, of course, comedic relief abounds in the production anyways. A noteworthy comedic performance is Aaron Krohn as Touchstone, who is essentially a court jester. The rapid delivery of his lines and his outlandish costumes help drive the show along, especially in the slower-moving first act of the production. Other noteworthy comedic performances were by Dani Stoller as Phoebe and Brian Reisman as Silvius in the second act. Their dysfunctional relationship, with Silvius as a lovesick man and Phoebe having absolutely none of it, adds a little hurdle in Rosalind's path when Phoebe falls for Ganymede after he seemingly chides her for her attitude. As you would expect in a Shakespeare comedy, hilarity ensues."
