In a not-so-distant time, in a city strikingly similar to this one, a deadly plague begins killing the citizenry--inexplicably, indiscriminately, and fast! What's going on? Who will die next? Can the disease be contained? Where can you turn? Only you and your cunning and skills can keep you alive 'til the end of the show. Do you have what it takes to survive? We can't all die, can we?

"... Were unsuspecting visitors to stumble into the room, you wouldn’t blame them for assuming the trial of an experimental drug was going horribly awry when, in fact, things were going dandily. The clever shenanigans of “A Killing Game” —whose premise is that as an epidemic spreads through a city, the stricken (you included) are dropping left, right and center —hinge less on familiar dramatic linchpins of plot and character than on a more dangerous variable: spectators willing to get up and play along."

"... A Killing Game was weird, stirring, uncomfortable, frightening, funny, illogical, confusing, upsetting, light-hearted and gay – and collectively all so vaguely familiar. The clownish theatrical experiment (inspired by Eugène Ionesco’s Jeux de Massacre (or Killing Game), Orson Welles’ War of the Worlds’ 1938 radio broadcast, and Fluxx (the card game with constantly changing rules) - is about a town faced with a deadly epidemic that repeatedly strikes the town and it’s citizenry lifeless – repeatedly in an assortment of situations. And as a member of the audience, I am to play an integral part in each scenario. Beforehand, I should – am encouraged to – familiarize myself with the premise through various social media outlets and they encourage the audience to bring a smart device – iPhone, Android, iPad, or tablet – just as one would in the event of a real emergency, or in any event, for that matter."

"... And dog & pony’s approach layers on more whimsy than the slender conceit can quite support. It’s one thing to stage a series of sketch-comedy vignettes designed to provoke an audience to reflect on its own mortality, and to consider just how strange our usual range of coping strategies (see: denial) truly is. It’s another to also invite your patrons to join in, playing various medical experts and eyewitnesses—and then still another to inform them that live social-media interaction is encouraged. I’m probably not the only attendee who discovered that between reading the deck of improv cue cards, following the #killinggame hashtag, and composing increasingly impatient tweets of my own, I’d gotten lost in a less-than-focused theatrical experience."

"... This is an incredibly entertaining show, much better and more fulfilling than a game of Clue. The actors are forced to reinvent themselves with every scene change, and do so admirably, improvising with the audience and each other without a hitch. Instead of seeing yet another rendition of A Christmas Carol this holiday season, why not see something active, engaging, and innovative? A Killing Game is all those things and more, hilarious and occasionally moving, but ultimately fun, as good theatre should be."

It takes some special theatre magic to conjure a lot from a little. And just our luck: dog&pony have been playing with some worthy new potions. The company’s name may imply a rickety ruse, but their shows have delivered both whimsy and substance over the past five seasons. This bunch have become one of DC’s craftier clans of spell-casters, particularly following the enthusiastic success of their audience-interactive Beertown this year.
