Venus Reviews
Washington City Paper- Somewhat Recommended
"...Gen Z is too afraid to date! People don't mingle in bars anymore! Everyone's got their face buried in their phones! Vats of ink have been spilled on requiems for courtship, and playwright Steve Yockey adds surrealist fuel to the fire with Venus, a new play running at Woolly Mammoth Theatre Company through Oct. 4, that asks: Would you kill for a great first date? Would you die for one?"

"...Written by Los Angeles-based playwright Steve Yockey, “Venus” pits odd against odder, and similar to some of his past works, what’s frightening is also funny."
MD Theatre Guide- Highly Recommended
"...There is a point fairly early in "Venus," now playing at Woolly Mammoth Theatre, when you realize that whatever you thought this play was going to be, you were probably wrong. Steve Yockey's new play, sponsored by the National New Play Network's Rolling World Premiere program, is, at times, a bit bonkers and, at others, a raw and gritty look at what humans are really all about."

"...The two-hander gets said appendages through its marvelous leads, Kimberly Gilbert and Regina Aquino. This being a much funnier show than expected, it creates particularly fertile ground for Gilbert to flex her range in acting. The level of physical humor alongside the dialogue, especially in tandem with the more straight-laced Aquino, makes for an engaging pair."

"...Imagine a circle of friends asking a new couple in their group, "How did you two get together?" Imagine the playful banter as the couple retells that fateful meeting. Did they find each other attractive? Who made the first move? What were the highlights of their first date? All this together is the plot for Steve Yockey's uproarious and heart-rending "Venus.""

"...Brazen butch meets fastidious femme, and their awkward date goes hilariously horrible. That's about all the teaser you need to know going into this seriously funny world premiere by Steve Yockey, now playing at Woolly Mammoth Theatre Company. The opening night audience was howling. The thing is, just about everything that happens between these two particular women necessarily comes as such a shock and astonishment that to say much more would be like piling on spoilers."
