Perisphere Theater presents the world premiere of The Storehouse by Joanna Castle Miller, directed by Amberrain Andrews. The Storehouse is based on the real-life interactions between the writers Harriet Beecher Stowe (Uncle Tom's Cabin) and Harriet Jacobs (Incidents in the Life of a Slave Girl). Attempting to become the first fugitive enslaved woman to publish her story by her own hand, Jacobs approaches the world-famous author Stowe for her help, and the result alters both of their lives and legacies forever.

"...As may often be the case with a new play, some reshaping and tightening of the script could be beneficial to future productions. The interchanges between Stowe and Jacobs are often wordy, and variations on similar disagreements become repetitious at times. The characters often exchange statements rather than engage in conversation. Under the direction of Amberrain Andrews, there is often little movement within scenes; the characters stand or sit and talk. The overall pace is languid, and the play, with its hour-and-ten-minute first act and much shorter second act, might profitably be condensed into a 90-minute one-act."

"...The actors do a wonderful job of bringing two very different women into a single orbit. Alison McAlister's Harriet Beecher Stowe is admittedly hard to like and that is precisely the point. Yet, McAlister hits her character's more vulnerable moments with an authenticity that compels the audience to take a second look at a now controversial, literary figure. You can't help but feel for Harriet Beecher Stowe during certain points in this play and that is all McAlister's doing."
