The Snowman and the Snowdog Reviews
MD Theatre Guide- Recommended
"...“The Snowman and The Snowdog” at Imagination Stage is a gentle and touching original adaptation of the 2012 animated short film that is a perfect choice for families of young children looking to fill the long, slow post-holiday week before school days return. The 24-minute original film contains no dialogue and just two human characters. Director Janet Stanford, who wrote Imagination Stage’s world premiere adaptation, expands the tale to include other children, a sympathetic teacher, and a cameo by Santa Claus. Adult actors Drew Sharpe as Billy, and Tyler Dobies and Alexandra López as his friends, capture the nuances of being age seven with sincerity."

"...The mood of the show does trend up as the snowman and the snowdog come into Billy’s life. It challenges the audience to use their imaginations as the main characters actually fly in the sky through a winter wonderland. There is ski racing creatively depicted using large white sheets and characters on sticks. There is also some dancing and singing and Drew Sharpe has a great voice. Spoiler alert – it’s a happy ending when Billy gets a real dog at the end of the play. It’s an actual, real-life dog named Sammy and the kids in the audience respond positively, as you would imagine young children would."

"...Playing outside in the snow on a frigid winter’s day is a fond childhood memory for many. Recollections of romping through cascading snowflakes and building objects from hills of snow often come to mind when thinking about this precious time. The Snowman and the Snowdog (adapted for the stage by Janet Stanford) vividly presents these cherished experiences, and Imagination Stage continues its 2025/26 programming with this enchanting tale. Stanford’s exquisite direction (in tandem with Tim Guillot’s compositions, orchestrations, and musical direction) richly brings the story to life. With a bouncy original score by Ilan Eshkeri and Andy Burrows, this enrapturing production features unforgettable tunes and a timeless fairytale storyline."
