The Piano Lesson Reviews
MD Theatre Guide- Highly Recommended
"...One of August Wilson's most celebrated plays, the Pulitzer Prize-winning drama "The Piano Lesson," takes audiences to 1930s Pittsburgh. Set in a modest home centered around an ancestral piano, the play evokes symbolic ghosts (both literal and figurative) to tell a deeply mesmerizing story about a family struggling to reconcile the trauma of the past with the realities of their "now.""

"...The strongest element of 1st Stage's presentation is the production design. Helen Hayes nominated set designer, Nadir Bey, built the Pittsburg family home where all the action takes place as an independent unit. It's set up so the cast can flow in and out of the house, up and down the stairs, and from room to room seamlessly. The design is both functional and thoughtful, down to the smallest detail."

"...Cursed. The Friday night review date I was assigned predicted rain - what actually occurred, about 15 minutes into August Wilson's The Piano Lesson at 1st Stage, was massive downpours that drowned out the actors, shook the roof, sent emergency alerts buzzing to our phones, cut the electricity, and canceled the performance. Kudos to all the actors and the behind-the-scenes folks for handling the situation with grace, even as I grumbled and trudged out into the downpour, unhappy about the unexpected circumstances."
