After surviving a tragedy, estranged husband and wife Don and Janna go on a series of "blind dates" to try to save their marriage. Based on the critically acclaimed films by Stanley Tucci and Theo Van Gogh, "The Personal(s)" is the third incarnation of a story that is often compared to the classic Who's Afraid of Virginia Woolf. Both heartbreaking and hilarious, "The Personal(s)" is a moving inquiry into humor, compassion and our ability to endure.

"...Daniel Conway's set looks very much like the kind of place a man might choose to meet his wife again and again - a bistro with checkered table cloths and posters of magicians on the walls. And Lighting Designer Cory Ryan Frank makes most of the illumination on stage seem to come from portrait lamps and hanging globes."

"...It's an interesting premise, to be sure, this idea that two married people can somehow become strangers to each other, but the concept is woefully destroyed by bad timing and exceedingly dry humor -- in fact, Sutow's story is so parched for laughs that at times it's difficult to distinguish between problems with the acting and its inherently dull script. As Kramer and Kanengeiser blandly go through the motions of several "dates," we are left to wonder whether it's the deliberately obtuse dialogue or the intentionally vague plot points that weigh down otherwise capable actors. Spencer Trinwith offers some relief in his miniature supporting role, but it isn't enough to elevate "The Personal(s)" to something universal."

"...The play keeps the action moving well through the many dates. Much like the films, only so much is revealed about the couple through the dates and in Sutrow's adaptation the audience is kept even more in the dark which makes the piece all the more gripping."

"...Many plays challenge viewers to think about difficult subjects, most of which can be elucidated onstage. But sexual dysfunction tied to tragedy? Yikes, that's tricky. It's been done, notably in the Pulitzer Prize-winning Rabbit Hole, but those characters go to therapy. Instead of asking viewers to explore a dark place, The Personal(s) just gets creepily awkward, as though Don and Janna desperately need an intervention."
