'Don't be afraid of that floor, hammer it!' Solas Nua, and Fishamble: The New Play Company, presents the award-winning The Humours of Bandon this summer. On the eve of the Irish Open championship, we meet Annie, a 16-year-old Dubliner, as she charts us through the various successes and disappointments of her Irish Dancing life. We share her mind numbing commitment and burning desire to win the Irish Open title. Will she win and, if so, in what way? From the confines of every parochial hall in Ireland, Irish Dancing champions are churned out at a massive rate. Medals and cups build up in drawing rooms and Riverdance swells a national pride, but the public aren't privy to the blood, sweat and tears that pave the way to the first place podium.

"...Coming-of-age stories tend to focus on how identities are formed at a time when self-identity isn’t clearly defined, when people don’t quite know what they think of themselves yet. Annie, though, seems to have defined herself already when we meet her. Humours, then, is the story of what happens when Annie feels like she is losing the very thing she has built her identity around.x

"...There is no mistaking that Margaret Mc Auliffe’s one-woman show, The Humours of Bandon, is a distinctly Irish import. Apart from the fact that it comes to Washington, D.C., courtesy of Solas Nua, the city’s hub for contemporary Irish culture, Mc Auliffe wears Ireland on her sleeve—or the front of her zip-up sweater, to be more accurate—while kicking her way through a coming-of-age tale set in the world of competitive Irish dance. Like any one-person show, it rises and falls on Mc Auliffe’s aptitude as a storyteller, and is most compelling as a window into a world that, though drawn from the Emerald Isle, chimes with much wider themes."

Audiences come to wholeheartedly believe in the various incarnations of Annie, clapping for her triumphs and sighing an authentic ‘aww’ for her losses. This is due, in large part, to Preissner’s instinctual hand in guiding McAuliffe’s voice through the shifting scenes and presumably encouraging her to take the kinds of chances that transform a one-person show from a somewhat staid monologue to a piece that fully, and quite beautifully, inhabits the stage."
