The Comeuppance Reviews

"...“The Comeuppance,” co-produced here with the Wilma Theater, is as much a dishy drama of rekindled flames and rivalries as it is a meditation on mortality. Emilio is a relentless instigator with his sights especially set on Katelyn (Sarah Gliko), a homemaker married to a much older man, and on Paco (Jaime Maseda), Katelyn’s ex, a veteran disguising his wounds with charm. Paco’s cousin Kristina (Taysha Marie Canales), a fellow veteran who’s now a doctor with five kids, insisted on the pregame and wants to party like they did when their lives were all promise and few consequences."

"...All these actors are brilliant in their roles: the energy of their performances and the specificity of their choices garner respect. But Emilio is the most mysterious character. He has resisted attending these reunions for years. And despite his artistic flamboyance, he remains the most invisible, least understood, therefore most desired character. And Jordan Bellow plays this role to the hilt."

"...A fascinating contemplation, The Comeuppance takes another journey into playwright Branden Jacobs-Jenkins' alternate universe in which the ordinary is sent spiraling into the extraordinary. With his usual mastery, Jacobs-Jenkins delivers with a precision instrument, weaving a subtle yet gripping tapestry of ideas, feelings and provocations."

"...The humor is both uncomfortable and, often, very funny. As created by Jacobs-Jenkins and ably staged by director Morgan Green, the audience gains perspective about these people: they make assumptions about the others and are seemingly incapable of seeing the truth."

"...Director Morgan Green seems to keenly understand the rhythm of Jacobs-Jenkins’ dialogue. The actors move about the stage, utilizing every facet of that stage in a type of dance—dancing around feelings, dancing around the reality of now, dancing around death’s door. There’s a poetic sensibility to the movement of this play that Green absolutely nails."

"...There have been other plays and musicals that have been set against the backdrop of a reunion such as Follies, That Championship Season and Heroes of the Fourth Turning but The Comeuppance truly takes us to a new theatrical level in content as well as form. The Comeuppance is a “slice of life” in all its tragic and comedic aspects."
