Signature Theatre kicks off its 25th anniversary season with Stephen Sondheim and James Lapine's Pulitzer Prize-winning musical Sunday in the Park with George. Inspired by the life of painter George Seurat, the production recreates the world of Seurat's painting "A Sunday Afternoon on the Island of La Grande Jatte." Through the course of the story, you get to know the painter whose unique vision altered the direction of modern art in France, as his masterpiece depicts members of different social classes enjoying a day out in the park. Through story and brilliant song, Sunday in the Park with George brings the figures in the painting to life, and you learn their stories along with that of the artist who immortalized them.

"...And then the characters in that painting begin to reassemble—anonymous on Seurat’s canvas, but given vivid life in Sunday in the Park by Lapine and Sondheim, and by Gardiner’s tight-knit ensemble cast. Donna Migliaccio’s Old Lady, alternately waspish and warm; Valerie Leonard’s artist’s-wife Yvonne, both snobbish and insecure; Paul Scanlan’s gruff Boatman and the giddy Celestes of Susan Derry and Erin Driscoll; and more, all of them contributing to a very fine picture of what it means to pour your soul into something, and what it might feel like to become immortal as a result."

"...Befitting a cast of this stature, there are many notable performances. Donna Migliaccio gives an alternately comic and wistful performance as the Old Lady, delivering a haunting rendition of "Beautiful" with Mr. Elder. Mitchell Hébert and Valerie Leonard are a fright, then a scream (and show great range) as they morph from art critic and social snob to their modern reincarnations of museum sycophant and slouchy conceptualist; look for their send-up of criticism in "No Life" early in Act I. Susan Derry and Erin Driscoll as Frick and Frack Celestes added bounce while Dan Manning (Mr.) and Maria Egler (Mrs. and Nurse) added heft. Evan Casey (Franz) and Angela Miller (Frieda) provide submissive bottom-up views of society while they alternately chase dominance with different partners. As the jeering Boatman and shy tech assistant Paul Scanlan takes it as far as you can go in characterization and gets the biggest laugh. And surely the most endearing performance, with and without her glasses, was the up-and-coming Sadie Rose Herman as Louise."

You never tire of looking at it and you see new things, feel new things every time you take it in.
