Songs of the Goat: Eurydice
1333 H Street NE Washington
In Sarah Ruhl's imaginative retelling of the classic myth, the story is finally told through the eyes of its heroine. Dying unexpectedly on her wedding day, Eurydice descends into an Underworld more theatrical playground than hellscape. Stripped of her memories and language, and policed by a Chorus of Stones, she reunites with her deceased Father, who tenderly helps her reconstruct her past. But when her husband, Orpheus, plays music beautiful enough to open the gates of hell to rescue her, Eurydice faces a devastating choice: follow the man she married back to a world she doesn't quite understand, or remain in the safe, familiar embrace of her father in the land of the dead.
