Small Mouth Sounds Reviews

"...Once you see the ocean you may never be able to return to the well. Once you say a thing, it's said and can never be unheard. Once you see Small Mouth Sounds at the Maryland Ensemble Theatre, the first production on their mainstage for the 2026 calendar year, you will certainly never be able to unsee it, and you may find yourself wondering if you need to be on the path of enlightenment. Or if you should perhaps take the Joan character's approach and go down the mental path of "who needs enlightenment, let's drink merlot!" Directed by Peter Wray, this play by Bess Wohl is a curious exploration of Buddhist enlightenment practices, which leaves a lot to be desired, percolates a lot of questions, and ultimately has too much talking for a play that promises to be more readily focused on silence."

"...Ultimately, this play has a lot to say about our interconnected journeys in these discordant times. Add to that the off-Broadway vibe of an evening out in downtown Frederick, and it's worth experiencing a play that seeks, however imperfectly, to remind us that we do not need loud, rude words to be civil and decent with one another."
