Set during a rehearsal for Luigi Pirandello’s The Rules of the Game, the play finds actors and a director interrupted by orphan characters, seeking to have their story told. As the actors, director, and characters struggle with reality and theatrical convention, we must ask ourselves, “Is all the world a stage?”

"...The fairly conventional treatment the piece receives under Tom Prewitt's direction at the Artisphere makes it a worthwhile experience for students of theater history and others who might be curious about how Pirandello's brain-teasing work fares on a stage. But it should be noted that even when inhabited by such watchable actors as Brian Hemmingsen and Nanna Ingvarsson, the play can't entirely shake off its faintly dated odor."

Pity Pirandello. He made the metanarrative possible, and then, for the next 90 years, other writers went and made him commonplace."

A company still takes a playwright’s heart, or art, in its hands when it performs one of his works, and it is impossible not to feel for these poor, bereft characters as they struggle to see their story – the only thing they have to live for – brought to life truthfully. Pirandello wrote his play so that most of the abandoned characters have only one dimension to their personalities, but the actors (the real actors, not Pirandello’s actors) play those single themes with such authenticity and completeness that we hardly notice that they are, in fact, incomplete.
