Silent Sky is the story of Henrietta Leavitt (1868-1921), an early twentieth century astronomer whose discovery of how to effectively measure vast astronomical distances led to a shift in the understanding of the scale and nature of the universe.

"...Looking up at the sky and wondering what is out there is an activity as old as time. One can’t help but wonder about our place in the bigger universe. Astronomers such as Henrietta Swan Leavitt take this question to a life long obsession. Written in 2011 by Lauren Gunderson, “Silent Sky” follows Leavitt as she becomes a computer at Harvard Observatory in the 1900s. In 2024, “Silent Sky” won the William Inge Theatre Festival Distinguished Achievement in the American Theatre Award. Directed by Susan Stroupe, Perisphere Theater’s production presents well-developed and emotionally-nuanced characters."
